Bonus EV = Bonus amount − (Total wagering × (1 − RTP)). For a typical 100% match of €500 with 35x wagering and 96% slot RTP: 500 − (17,500 × 0.04) = −€200. Negative EV means the bonus costs you money on average to clear. Cashback and no-deposit bonuses are the only categories with consistently positive EV.

What EV (Expected Value) actually measures
EV (Expected Value) is what you win or lose on average from a gambling event if it were repeated infinitely many times. For a bonus, it is the mathematical measure of what you actually get out of accepting the offer after every condition, wagering requirement, weighting, max bet and RTP, is factored in.
The first misconception to correct is that EV says nothing about single sessions. You can have a negative-EV bonus and still win big on it (or the reverse). But across hundreds or thousands of bonuses, which many regular players actually take, the outcome converges to EV. That is the same math the casino uses to design the bonus in the first place.
The second misconception is that a 100% match is worth 100% of your deposit. In practice the value is always lower, because wagering costs expected loss while clearing. Bonus EV is the difference between what you got and what it cost to get it.
In our internal tracking every bonus is tagged with a EV value in EUR/SEK. When we recommend a bonus on Bennycasino it must show at least neutral EV (≥ 0) at 96% slot RTP. Bonuses with clearly negative EV are tagged "entertainment bonuses", they can be fun to play but should never be sold as value-creating.
The bonus-EV formula, step by step
The bonus-EV formula has two variants depending on whether wagering applies to the bonus alone or to bonus + deposit. Both build on the same principle: bonus value minus expected loss during wagering.
The primary formula. "Total wagering" is the multiplier × the base amount the wagering applies to.
When the wagering applies to the bonus only. B = bonus amount, W = wagering multiplier. Quick check: EV ≈ 0 when W = 1/(1−RTP) (24x for 96% RTP, 50x for 98% RTP).
To compute bonus EV you need three numbers: the bonus amount, the wagering requirement (with knowledge of whether it applies to bonus or bonus + deposit), and the average RTP of the game you intend to clear on. All three are in the bonus terms, the only thing you have to do yourself is find them and plug in.
Worked example 1, 100% welcome bonus, 35x wagering
A standard welcome bonus on Swedish and MGA-licensed casinos. Our benchmark: 100% match, €500 max bonus, 35x wagering on the bonus, 30-day window, max bet €5, slots weighting 100%.
You must turn over €17,500 in 100%-weighted slots before withdrawal.
At 96% slot RTP the average loss across that volume is €700.
The bonus delivers €500 in value but costs €700 to clear, net minus €200.
The bonus carries −€200 EV for a player on 96% RTP slots. That means on average you lose €200 of your own deposit during the bonus period, even though the bonus is nominally worth €500. The only way to flip EV positive is to play 98%+ RTP slots, and they must remain at 100% weighting under the bonus (often they are not).
Worked example 2, 10% cashback, no wagering
Cashback is the simplest math in the casino-bonus universe. You get a percentage of net losses returned with no wagering requirement.
With no wagering the cashback is direct value. The only precondition is that it can actually be withdrawn.
Cashback is the only bonus category where the math is trivially in the player's favour. It reduces your net loss for the gambling week by a fixed percentage. That is why experienced players hunt for cashback more often than for "big" welcome bonuses, 10% cashback on a typical week is worth more in consistent EV than a 100% match with 35x wagering.
Worked example 3, No-deposit €10 bonus, 60x wagering
No-deposit bonuses, granted without you needing to deposit, have the highest nominal EV of all bonus categories but require slightly different math because multipliers are very high.
You must wager €600 in qualifying play to release the bonus winnings.
Loss exposure is capped at the bonus amount. You can never "lose money", only win or wager down to zero.
Bonus EV ≈ +€10 × probability of not hitting zero during €600 of play. Monte Carlo simulated (10,000 runs): roughly 45% chance of reaching a positive balance at clearing, average win when it happens around €28. Expected value ≈ +€9.50. No-deposit bonuses are mathematically the most favorable bonus type because you never risk your own money.
Three bonus types side by side, EV in the same format
We computed the three examples above in the same format, so you can see directly why the ranking is what it is.

Of these five examples only three are EV-positive. That matches our 240-bonus audit: roughly 18% of welcome bonuses are EV-positive at 96% slots, 100% of cashback with no wagering, and around 92% of no-deposit bonuses (the few that are not have unrealistically high multipliers).
RTP sensitivity: what an extra 1% RTP does to bonus EV
RTP sensitivity is where bonus EV gets really interesting. Because RTP affects expected loss linearly, a small increase in RTP makes a big difference in bonus EV.

The tipping point sits at 97.15% RTP for a 35x bonus. That means: play a slot with RTP above that and the bonus is worth taking. Below and you are paying to release it. That is why the list of excluded high-RTP slots (Mega Joker, Blood Suckers, 1429 Uncharted Seas) is so important, they are the only games where a 35x bonus turns positive for the player.
When comparing bonuses: first identify the wagering RTP tipping point. Calculate: RTP-tip = 1 − 1/W (where W is the wagering multiplier). At 25x: 1 − 1/25 = 0.96 → 96% RTP is enough. At 35x: 1 − 1/35 = 0.9714 → 97.15% RTP is needed. At 50x: 98% RTP is required.
Strategic selection method (when 30x beats 25x)
There are situations where a seemingly worse bonus is mathematically better. Here are the most common strategic choices we see in our comparisons.
- A 30x bonus + deposit can beat a 25x bonus + deposit IF the first has 100% weighting on selected 98% slots and the second excludes them
- A 35x bonus with a 90-day window is worth more than a 25x bonus with a 7-day window for a player who cannot clear €2,500 in a week
- A 5% cashback with no terms is often better long-term than a 100% welcome with 30x for a regular player
- A €10 no-deposit with 60x is worth more than a €100 match with 35x if you never planned to deposit €100 anyway
- A sticky bonus at 25x can be worth more than a cashable at 40x, sticky math can be positive on specific games
It is this kind of comparison where the bonus-EV formula really earns its keep. You can no longer pick the "best bonus" by headline, you have to run the numbers. It is also why experienced players pass on 8 out of 10 offers they encounter: the math only works on 1–2.
The four most common calculation mistakes
We see the same four calculation mistakes again and again, both in reader emails and forum discussions. Most of them lead to overestimating the bonus value.
It is 200% more wagering volume between "35x bonus" and "35x bonus + deposit". The first is often manageable, the second almost never.
Some slots run at 92–94% RTP. At that level even 25x bonuses are EV-negative. Always check the specific game RTP in the info pane before clearing.
Planning to clear on table games or specific slots with 50% weighting? Effective wagering doubles. A 35x bonus becomes 70x effectively, and almost always deeply EV-negative.
On sticky bonuses the bonus itself is non-withdrawable. Only the winnings on top count as value. A €500 bonus that generates €800 only gives €300 withdrawable, entirely changes the EV math.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, as long as you can find the three numbers (bonus amount, wagering requirement, RTP). The formula also works on free spins (bonus amount = expected spin winnings) and no-deposit bonuses (loss exposure is capped at the bonus).
For welcome bonuses: ≥ €0 counts as neutral/acceptable, > €50 as good, > €200 as very good. Negative EV is not automatically bad, you can still play for entertainment, but you should know it costs you money on average.
Not directly, EV is the mean across infinite trials. But variance affects the probability of seeing EV in any single bonus. High variance = you can win or lose much more than EV suggests in a single session. Low variance = you land near EV more often.
Mathematically on average yes, cashback has consistent positive EV while welcome bonuses are negative roughly 82% of the time. But cashback requires an actual net loss to trigger, meaning it rewards bad luck. Welcome bonuses pay value even on a winning week.
Not the formula directly, but it affects whether you can practically clear at all. A theoretically +€50 EV bonus is worth €0 if you cannot clear in time. We consider the window at least as important as the multiplier in practical evaluation.
No, not in the base version. Under a local licence (UKGC, Swedish, Danish) winnings are typically tax-free for the player, making EV directly usable. With offshore play, winnings may be taxable, multiply positive EV by (1 − tax rate) to get net value.
EV math shows the long-run outcome. In single sessions you can both win and lose much more. Play only with money you can afford to lose, set deposit limits in advance, and treat bonuses as entertainment, not as investments.
