What "35x" actually means
Wagering requirements always appear as a multiplier, 35x, 30x, 45x and similar. The number alone says nothing. The relevant question is what it gets multiplied with.
There are two main models. On MGA-licensed casinos the multiplier usually applies only to the bonus amount. On Swedish-licensed sites "bonus + deposit" is the default. Free spins use a third formula: the multiplier applies to the winnings generated from the spins, not the spin value itself. Three formulas, all visible below.
In our internal tracking we tag every bonus with "B" or "B+D" (bonus + deposit) and "FS-W" for free-spin wins. Note it before clicking accept. If the terms do not state the model clearly, that is a red flag in itself, ask support and save the response in an email.
1) Does the multiplier apply to bonus or bonus + deposit? 2) Which games count 100% towards wagering? 3) How long is the window from when the bonus is credited? If the operator cannot give precise answers on all three, pass.
The wagering formula, step by step
Total wagering is not mystical. Two formulas cover more than 90% of all bonus math you will encounter.
When the multiplier applies to the bonus only. Default on MGA-licensed operators.
When the multiplier applies to the combined balance. More common with Swedish licences. In practice at least double the wagering volume.
From total wagering you derive expected loss by multiplying with (1 − RTP). A slot at 96% RTP returns 4% loss for every euro wagered. That is where the real cost of the bonus lives.
Worked example 1, 35x on bonus (international standard)
We start with the simpler model, multiplier applies only to the bonus.
You must turn over €17,500 in qualifying play before withdrawal.
At 96% slot RTP the average loss over that volume is €700.
You hold €500 in bonus against €700 in expected loss. Expected net result: −€200 of your own deposit. Single sessions can swing widely in either direction, but across tens of thousands of players the result converges, and that is the operator margin.
Worked example 2, 35x on bonus + deposit (common in Sweden)
Same offer, but now the multiplier applies to the combined balance. This is the phrasing that crushes the most bonuses in Sweden.
Combined wagering is exactly double the bonus-only model.
At 96% slot RTP the average loss is €1,400 on the same offer.
The bonus is still worth €500, but it now costs €1,400 to clear on average. Expected net: at least −€900. This is the textbook reason you must check whether wagering applies to "bonus" or "bonus + deposit". The difference is a full 200% in wagering volume.
Worked example 3, 40x on free-spin winnings
Free-spin bonuses often advertise a lower nominal multiplier but apply it to winnings, which makes the math heavier than it looks.
You must wager €1,920 in slots to release roughly €48 in potentially withdrawable winnings.
The average loss while clearing is more than the winnings you are trying to release.
The uncomfortable conclusion: free spins with 40x wagering on winnings produce a statistically negative result when you try to clear them fully. Free spins are fun as entertainment, but the math does not support treating them as value-creating bonuses.
How game weighting changes your real wagering
The multiplier sets your nominal wagering. Game weighting decides how much of your actual stake counts towards it. At 100% your full stake counts; at 10% only a tenth counts. That means real wagering on some categories can be ten times the nominal number.

A 35x bonus where you try to clear in blackjack at 10% weighting requires 350× the bonus in actual wagered volume. On a €500 bonus that is €175,000 in blackjack stakes. With the Swedish €5 max-bet cap that means 35,000 hands, over 300 hours of effective play. That is not a bonus you clear.
Time-to-clear: how many spins or hands you actually need
Time-to-clear is the practical side of wagering math. How many spins or hands do you actually need, and can you reach them inside the clearing window?
At €0.50 per spin with 35x bonus on a €500 bonus the wagering volume is €17,500 / €0.50 = 35,000 spins. At 600 spins per hour that is 58 effective playing hours. Spread over 30 days that is nearly 2 hours of slot play daily. The UKGC 2024 consumer study found 51% of UK bonus takers miss the clearing window on their first bonus, not because they want to, but because the math is hidden inside the marketing.
Bonuses with 7-day windows and 35x wagering are practically impossible to clear unless you play at least 8 hours a day. We have seen premium bonuses with 90-day windows, where a normal work week fits comfortably inside the timeline. The window is often at least as important as the multiplier but is rarely highlighted.
Before clicking accept: divide total wagering by days in the window, then by your typical spin value and spins per hour. If you end up needing more than three hours per day, consider passing. Entertainment should never become a deadline project.
Max-bet sets the pace, and gets you home or stops you cold
The max-bet rule affects both risk and pace. Swedish licensees typically cap bonus play at €5–€10 per spin; MGA ranges from €2 to €25. The rules are not arbitrary, they balance how fast you can clear against how much variance the operator can absorb.
Reverse engineering: a €500 bonus at 35x bonus = €17,500 wagering. At a €5 cap that is 3,500 spins; at €10 cap, 1,750 spins. Fewer, larger spins mean higher per-spin variance but shorter total time. We have personally used the approach of playing €5 over 3,500 spins versus €0.50 over 35,000, per-session risk is higher, expected result identical.
The critical point: never violate max-bet. Auto-spin with a stored value, Bonus Buy features that count as a single huge stake, or a forgotten default stake of €20 when the cap is €5, all three are scenarios where we have seen players forfeit five-figure winnings. The casino will not refund the winnings even if you "only" broke the rule by accident.

Despite re-regulation in 2019 the Swedish market kept relatively high wagering requirements, often phrased as "bonus + deposit". UKGC has had the strictest transparency rules since 2022, making UK bonuses the easiest to compare. MGA bonuses span the widest range and require the most reading. Yes, when weighting is 100%. But it gets complicated: some casinos count only stakes from the bonus balance, others both bonus and real money. Read the "Bonus funds usage" section in the terms carefully or ask support directly.
