Bonus EV = Bonus amount − (Total wagering × (1 − RTP)). For a typical £500 bonus with 35x wagering and 96% slot RTP: 500 − (17,500 × 0.04) = −£200. Negative EV means the bonus costs you money on average to clear. UKGC bonuses must show wagering clearly, making this calculation easier than on offshore offers.

What EV (Expected Value) actually measures
EV (Expected Value) is what you win or lose on average from a gambling event if repeated infinitely many times.
EV says nothing about single sessions. You can have a negative-EV bonus and still win big. But across hundreds of bonuses the outcome converges to EV.
A 100% match is not worth 100% of your deposit in practice, value is always lower because wagering costs expected loss.
In our internal tracker every bonus is tagged with a EV value in £. At 96% slot RTP we only recommend bonuses with neutral or positive EV.
The bonus-EV formula, step by step
The bonus-EV formula has two variants based on whether wagering applies to the bonus alone or to bonus + deposit. UKGC bonuses use bonus-only model almost always.
The primary formula.
EV ≈ 0 when W = 1/(1−RTP). At 96% RTP: 24x. At 98% RTP: 50x.
You need three numbers: bonus amount, wagering requirement and average RTP.
Worked example 1, 100% welcome bonus, 35x wagering
Standard UK welcome bonus: 100% match, £500 max, 35x wagering, 30-day window.
You must turn over £17,500 in qualifying slot play.
At 96% RTP.
Net minus £200.
Negative EV at 96%. Requires 98%+ RTP slots for positive EV.
Worked example 2, 10% cashback, no wagering
Cashback has the simplest math in the casino bonus world.
Direct value with no wagering.
Cashback is the only bonus type with trivially positive EV. UKGC operators commonly offer 5–10% cashback as part of a loyalty program.
Worked example 3, No-deposit £5 bonus, 60x wagering
No-deposit bonuses on UKGC sites are limited to £5–£25 typically, but loss exposure is capped at the bonus.
You must wager £300 in slots.

Strategic selection method
Situations where a seemingly worse bonus is mathematically better:
- 30x bonus beats 25x IF the first allows higher-RTP slots in clearing
- 35x with 90-day window beats 25x with 7-day window for a casual player
- 5% cashback long-term beats 100% welcome with 30x
- £5 no-deposit at 60x beats £100 match at 35x if you would not have deposited anyway
- Sticky 25x can beat cashable 40x in certain games
