Volatility vs RTP – not the same thing
RTP says how much of every wagered unit comes back to the player pool over millions of spins. A 96.5 % slot will return roughly 96.5 of every 100 wagered, in the very long run. What RTP does not tell you is how those 96.5 units are paid out. That distribution is what we call volatility, variance, or dispersion.
Take two real games with near-identical RTP. NetEnt's Starburst sits at 96.09 % RTP. Money Train 2 from Relax Gaming runs at 96.40 % RTP. The provider info screens classify them as 6/10 and 10/10 volatility respectively. We logged 600 spins on each at 1 unit per spin. Starburst returned a win on 24 % of spins, with the largest single payout being 26x our stake. Money Train 2 returned a win on 16 % of spins, with the largest single payout being 411x. Both games are statistically heading toward the same RTP. Both deliver an unmistakably different session.
The takeaway is simple. Two slots can promise the same long-run return and still cost very different amounts of bankroll, time, and emotional patience to actually reach that return. Volatility is the road. RTP is just the destination on the sign.
Hit frequency, explained
Hit frequency is the share of spins that return any win. It does not care whether the win is bigger or smaller than your stake – it just counts the spin as a hit. Pragmatic Play and NetEnt publish this number on their game info screens. Hacksaw Gaming and Nolimit City do not, but the math is the same.
Important nuance: in many slots, more than half of the recorded "hits" actually pay less than the stake. A 10p spin on Big Bass Bonanza that returns 8p is logged as a hit by the math, but you still lost 2p on it. Researchers Kevin Harrigan and Mike Dixon called these "losses disguised as wins" in their 2009 PAR-sheet study. We strip them out before publishing our own session data so the numbers you see reflect real net-positive spins.

Standard deviation – the math behind your session
If hit frequency tells you how often something happens, standard deviation tells you how violent the swings are when it does. In slot math, the standard deviation (σ) is expressed in stake-units per spin. A σ of 5 means a typical spin can deviate from the expected return by ± 5 times your bet. A σ of 12 means ± 12 stake-units. Bigger σ = bigger swings = bigger bankroll needed to ride out the variance.
Where pᵢ is the probability of outcome i, xᵢ is its payout in stake-units, and μ is the game's expected return (RTP).
In their 2004 paper for the Journal of Gambling Issues, Nigel Turner and Roger Horbay reported typical slot σ values: classic three-reel slots clock in around 4–6, modern 5-reel video slots around 8–15, and modern bonus-buy or "Megaways" titles can hit σ above 20. Money Train 2 has a σ of roughly 28 according to Relax Gaming's own math sheet, which is published in the casino back-office. That is why the 96.4 % RTP can take 200,000 spins to converge.
Low, medium and high variance – with concrete examples
The industry typically splits slot volatility into five bands. The boundaries are not fixed by law – providers and trackers set them slightly differently – but the ranges below match how Pragmatic Play, NetEnt and Bigwinboard classify games today. We have added max-win caps because they are the single biggest tell on volatility.

On a high-variance slot, the most common single outcome of a 1,000-spin session is "you lost more than half your bankroll without ever triggering the big feature". That is not bad luck. That is the design.
Bonus frequency – why modern slots stash 80 % of their RTP in the feature
Modern bonus-buy slots concentrate the lion's share of their RTP inside the free-spins or bonus round. Hacksaw Gaming, Nolimit City, Push Gaming and Print Studios routinely build games where 70–85 % of the total RTP is locked behind a bonus that triggers naturally every 200–400 spins. That is also why bonus-buy buttons exist – they let you skip the base-game grind.
For you, this matters in three ways. First, your effective RTP in the base game alone is often closer to 20–25 % than the headline 96 %. Second, your bankroll-survival math has to budget for at least one or two non-triggering 300-spin droughts. Our measurement method – how we track volatility over 10,000+ spins
We do not trust marketing-grade volatility labels. Here is what we actually log per slot in our review database.
- Minimum 10,000 spins per slot. Anything less is statistical noise. We run a mix of demo-mode (for spin volume) and real-money sessions (to confirm the same math is delivered live).
- Spin-level capture. Stake, return, feature triggered yes/no, return-as-multiple-of-stake. Stored as CSV.
- Net-positive hit rate. We strip out losses-disguised-as-wins (return < stake) and report only spins that paid more than the bet.
- Empirical σ. We compute the sample standard deviation directly from the spin log and compare it to provider-published σ. Differences above ± 10 % flag the slot for re-test.
- Cross-casino RTP audit. Many slots ship in 2–3 RTP versions. We open the game info screen at each of the casinos we review and record which version that operator runs.

Common misconceptions – and what the math says instead
No. Every spin on a certified slot is independent. The RNG has no memory. A cold streak does not raise the next spin's chance of paying out. Natasha Dow Schüll documented this exact belief in her 2012 book "Addiction by Design" and showed how slot designers actively exploit it. Treat each spin as a coin flip with house edge – the previous outcomes do not move the odds.
Same fallacy. A slot does not warm up or cool down. What looks like a hot session is just one tail of the variance distribution that you happened to be standing in. The next 1,000 spins on the same slot have exactly the same RTP and σ as the previous 1,000.
No. Big max-wins like 50,000x almost always come with lower hit rates and dead base games. The RTP is held roughly constant – the math team just moves more of it into the tail. Sweet Bonanza has a 21,100x cap but pays better on average per spin than San Quentin xWays despite San Quentin's 150,000x cap.

Is high-variance slot play more profitable than low-variance?
No. Over the long run both converge to the same RTP. High variance just delivers it in a more extreme distribution – a few big sessions, many losing ones. Profitability over a player's lifetime is identical at equal RTP.
How many spins do I need before RTP starts to show?
Statistically, a 96 % slot needs around 100,000 spins before observed return is within ± 2 % of theoretical at 95 % confidence. For a high-variance slot like Money Train 2 it is closer to 250,000. No casual player gets there.
Does the bonus-buy feature offer worse RTP?
Sometimes. On most Pragmatic and Hacksaw titles the bonus-buy RTP is 1–2 percentage points higher than the base game alone, but the variance is much higher and the per-press cost is 50–100x your spin. On Nolimit City the bonus-buy RTP is usually identical to the headline number.
