RTP and House Edge: The Math Behind Casino Games

10 min Lesezeit Aktualisiert 2026-03-30

We have read the reports, scrutinised the numbers, and worked out what they actually mean for you. The biggest takeaway: RTP is not a promise – it is an average across millions of rounds.

RTP and House Edge: The Math Behind Casino Games
The short answer

Actual RTP often deviates from the advertised value. An independent analysis of 3.3 million game rounds gave an average score of 75/100 – "moderate alignment". The same slot can have up to 2 percentage points of RTP difference depending on which casino you play at. We show why – and which games actually deliver.

What is RTP?

RTP stands for Return to Player. It is the theoretical share of all money wagered on a game that is paid back to players over time. If the provider says 96 % RTP, that means out of every 100 units wagered on the game, 96 units on average go back to the player pool – and 4 units stay with the casino. As an individual player you can win a lot more or lose a lot more than that in a single session. RTP is calculated across millions of spins.

Important to Understand
  • RTP is a long-term metric that requires hundreds of thousands or millions of spins to become statistically relevant
  • Individual sessions can deviate significantly from advertised RTP
  • The same game can have different RTP at different casinos

Relationship Between RTP and House Edge

RTP and house edge are two sides of the same coin. The formula is simple:

100% − RTP = House Edge

Example: 100% − 96% RTP = 4% house edge

The house edge represents the casino's mathematical advantage. A game with 4% house edge means the casino on average keeps 4 units of every 100 units wagered.

RTP by Game Type

Different game types have drastically different RTP levels. Here's an overview based on industry data:

Game Type Typical RTP House Edge Variance
Blackjack 99.5% 0.5% Low
Baccarat (Banker) 98.94% 1.06% Low
Video Poker (Jacks or Better) 99.54% 0.46% Medium
Roulette (European) 97.3% 2.7% Medium
Roulette (American) 94.74% 5.26% Medium
Slots (average) 94-96% 4-6% High
Baccarat (Tie) 85.64% 14.36% High

Reality vs theory – what we found

Here is where it gets interesting. Independent measurements show clear differences between certified and observed RTP. We went through an analysis of more than 3.3 million game rounds across 30+ live casino games and found three patterns worth knowing:

75/100
Average Fairness Score
Grade B (Moderate)
0%
Best Deviation
Lightning Baccarat
2.11%
Slot RTP Variation
Big Bass Splash (94.60-96.71%)
Our conclusion

The same slot can give you up to 2 percentage points worse RTP at the wrong casino. That is the difference between 3.29 % and 5.40 % house edge – almost twice as expensive to play. Check the RTP in the game info panel before you start. In our view, a single percentage point is worth changing casino for.

What to do in practice

  1. Choose High RTP Games. For slots: aim for 96%+ RTP. For table games: blackjack and baccarat (banker) offer the best odds.
  2. Verify RTP at the Casino. The same slot can have different RTP levels. Check in the game's help section or contact support.
  3. Avoid "Sucker Bets". Avoid games/bets with extremely low RTP like Tie bet in baccarat (85.64%) or insurance in blackjack.
  4. Understand Variance. High variance = bigger swings. A slot with 96% RTP and high variance gives fewer but larger wins than one with low variance.

We summarise

RTP is the best tool we have for comparing games – but you need to know what it does not tell you:

  • Table games like blackjack (99.5 %) and baccarat banker (98.94 %) consistently offer higher RTP than slots.
  • Actual RTP can deviate from theoretical RTP, even over millions of rounds.
  • Choice of casino matters – the same slot can vary by 2+ percentage points in RTP.
  • RTP says nothing about variance – two 96 % slots can give completely different experiences.
Play responsibly

Even a slot with 98 % RTP means the casino keeps 2 of every 100 you wager – over time. You cannot calculate the house edge away. Only play with money you can afford to lose, set a time limit before you start, and remember that winning is never guaranteed.
